Botox ®, Dysport ® and Xeomin® Injections as Prevention
You do not have to wait until you look old to start getting treatments for facial lines and wrinkles. Many patients in their late 20's and early 30’s are now getting preventative treatments in the form of fillers, prescription grade skin care lines and neurotoxin injections such as Botox®, Dysport® and the newest FDA approved neurotoxin Xeomin®.
You form lines on you face because of the action of your facial muscles on your skin. As the muscles contract, they bunch up the skin, which lies over them. Over time, along with age, heredity and sun damage, this accordion effect of the skin results in the formation of permanent lines and wrinkles.
By paralyzing or weakening these muscles with Botox® or similar injections, the muscles contract much less if at all resulting in fewer facial wrinkles. If you start with regular injections before these lines have already formed, you can significantly delay their appearance; especially if you combine these treatments with a good skin care line (we like Obagi® and GlowBiotics®) as well as strict sun avoidance.
As far as skin protection is concerned, avoiding exposure is obviously the best. For those where that is not possible, there are a variety of things that can be done. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat provides considerable protection to the face and scalp. Wearing an SPF 30 sun protectant (found in many of the above mentioned products) is critical. It is important to reapply it every few hours, even on cloudy days. You get very little additional protection from products above an SPF of 30; you just pay a lot more for them.
As is with many things in life, a ‘shotgun’ approach works best. Combining neurotoxin and filler injections along with sun protection, an aggressive skin care line, facials (especially Hydrafacials® ) and eventually skin peels and lasers (Fraxel®) can significantly improve your skin quality and delay the need for a facelift.
