Personal Decision

The decision to undergo breast augmentation surgery to increase the size of your breasts is a very personal one; one that you should not take lightly. You should not do it for someone else such as a spouse or boyfriend. You should only have elective cosmetic surgery, such as breast augmentation if it is something that you want for yourself. It will not fix a bad marriage or a broken relationship.

You should have more confidence in a doctor who will honestly tell you about the risks and potential complications of breast augmentation surgery and one who will discuss with you the different options that are available to you with implant procedures. Untoward reactions such as excessive bleeding, capsular contracture, and nipple numbness will be frankly discussed with you by Dr. McMahan, as well as methods to minimize the possibilities of adverse reactions to surgery.

Medications and Smoking

Medications such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen will not be allowed prior to surgery in order to help reduce risks of excessive bleeding. Smoking will also be discouraged, but antibiotics will usually be prescribed during the period around the time of surgery to decrease the risk of infection.

An anesthetic will be provided by an anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist with physician oversight. A relatively short incision is made for access to the area where the pocket will be made for the implant, typically under the chest muscle for best results. Both silicone and saline implants can be used for the procedure; there are both pros and cons for each type of implant and these will be discussed with you if you are undecided as to which one to opt for.

Silicone vs. Saline

A silicone implant is more expensive and a slightly longer incision needs to be made for insertion, while the saline implant requires a shorter opening and is less expensive. Silicone implant ruptures are not easy to detect because there is minimal change to the breast size while saline ruptures are easily discerned because there is typically a complete loss of the volume of the implant. However, silicone implants tend to feel more natural than saline implants and they tend to have a lower risk of rippling along the edge. Currently, about 70-80% of patients choose silicone implants over saline.

Recovery

Recovery for breast augmentation surgery is often less than what many patients expect with most returning to non-strenuous jobs within a week. For the vast majority of patients who have their implants placed under the muscle, it is best to keeps their arms down to the side and not raise their elbows over their head for several weeks to protect the muscle which has been partially cut, sutured, and is now on stretch as it is tented up over a prosthesis.

Good candidates for breast augmentation are women who desire an increase in breast size. Patients should be in good physical health and have realistic expectations.
